What to visit

Montefrío has become a popular tourist destination for a number of reasons. Visiting Montefrío is certainly a surprising experience.
The first impressive view that we come across is the wonderful monumental ensemble formed by the Arab Fortress and the Church of La Villa, perched on the top of a large rock, as a sample of bold architecture and photogenic praise. At present, this church houses the Interpretation Center of the Last Frontier of Al-Andalus. At the foot of the castle, narrow and winding streets of Arabic layout are scattered on the hillside creating an amazing cluster of white houses dotted with window bars and flower pots. The Town Square is dominated by the Church of La Encarnación, a magnificent example of Neoclassisism in Granada. Other interesting monuments are the old hospital San Juan de los Reyes, the Town Hall, El Pósito ( the Royal Granary) and the Baroque Church of San Antonio, located in a square that serves as a splendid viewpoint overlooking the town.
Four kilometers from the town center towards Illora, visitors get to Las Peñas de los Gitanos, the first human settlement known within the area. It is a beautiful natural site that thanks to its dolmens of Neolithic origin, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the province.
Montefrío offers other very attractive natural spots, such as: El Barranco de los Molinos, where you can still see remains of Roman flour mills, the Sierra de Parapanda, Arroyo de los Pinares or Sierra de Chanzas, all of them suitable places for outdoor sports practice.
